The Spanish Government, through the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco), has signed the ministerial order greenlighting the entry into service of the electrical link between Tenerife and La Gomera. Construction for this infrastructure concluded last February, thus granting legal recognition to the new unified electrical system.
This authorization will integrate the electrical subsystems of both islands, leading to a significant increase in energy efficiency and improved supply security. The interconnection will enable mutual support between the systems, substantially reducing the risk of blackouts, particularly in La Gomera, which experienced a three-day outage in the summer of 2023.
The benefits of this integration will be most pronounced in La Gomera, as it joins a more robust system with greater technical capacity. Tenerife, in turn, will also benefit from the renewable potential of the neighboring island.
From July 1st, a single programming and dispatch system will be established for electricity generation, backup needs calculation, reserve management, and the integration of new renewable energy sources and storage.
The ministerial order, which legally recognizes the existence of a single electrical system consistent with the physical reality of both islands, will be published soon in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
