The celebration, taking place from 7:00 PM, will feature a delegation from the Republic of Turkey, sharing the particularities of its whistled language. This tradition, rooted in the Black Sea region and towns like Kuşköy, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2017 on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
During the event, the Island Council will present an international recognition to the Republic of Turkey, through its Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the General Directorate of Living Heritage and Cultural Activities, for its commitment to protecting whistled languages and contributing to exchanges between communities.
Furthermore, three institutions will be honored for their contributions to the conservation and transmission of Silbo Gomero: Garajonay National Park, for the twinning of two World Heritage sites; the University of La Laguna, for its research and study contributions; and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, for its commitment to research and dissemination.
Music will also be a highlight, with singer-songwriter Belén Doreste (Lajalada) presenting an artistic proposal that merges music and Silbo Gomero, demonstrating the language's capacity to engage with new creative forms while maintaining its connection to La Gomera's territory and identity.
The commemoration will also include a screening of the exhibition «yo, Guirre», which explores the history, transmission, and current relevance of Silbo Gomero through images, documents, and audiovisual resources. Copies of the proceedings from the 15th Anniversary International Conference will also be available.
