The General Directorate of Blood Donation and Hemotherapy of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) has renewed its collaboration agreement with Fred. Olsen Express, strengthening inter-island logistics for the transport of blood and mobile units, especially in adverse situations.

The alliance, which began in 2016, was signed by the director of Hemodonación and Hemoterapia, Francisco Javier Rodríguez, and on behalf of Fred. Olsen Express, by the head of the commercial department, Lorenzo Spinelli, and the head of communication and marketing, Marina González.
This agreement ensures the maritime transport of mobile units for blood donation campaigns and the inter-island transport of blood and blood components. Francisco Javier Rodríguez highlighted the importance of this collaboration, particularly in adverse weather conditions or exceptional circumstances like the eruption of the volcano on La Palma, which prevent air transport.
The agreement facilitates the operational conditions for urgent shipments or those requiring special attention. Furthermore, it allows for the connection of refrigerated vans for transporting plasma to the onboard electrical network during crossings, ensuring adequate conservation conditions.
Fred. Olsen Express will also collaborate in campaigns to promote altruistic blood donation among its staff and passengers, and through its various corporate communication channels, joining corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Both entities reinforce their commitment to Canarian society and the promotion of blood donation to save lives and guarantee the necessary health reserves for the Archipelago.
To ensure the proper development of the agreement, a joint monitoring commission will be established to evaluate maritime transfers, analyze potential incidents, and plan campaigns, producing an annual activity report.
It is reminded that to donate blood, individuals must be between 18 and 65 years old (up to 60 for the first donation), weigh over 50 kilos, be in good general health, and not be pregnant. For any queries, the donor helpline is 900 234 061.
