This decision represents a step forward in the search for native renewable energy alternatives and the exploitation of the Canary Islands' geothermal potential. The initiative is part of the Canarias Sostenible strategy and aligns with the objectives of the Climate Change Law and the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan.
The measure is supported by European Regulation 2022/2577, which establishes temporary measures to accelerate renewable energies and considers these projects of overriding public interest. None of the planned soundings are located within natural spaces included in the Canary Islands Network of Protected Natural Areas or Natura 2000. The project has been evaluated and validated by specialized technical personnel from the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council of La Palma.
The regional Executive will apply the corresponding environmental monitoring protocols during the execution of the work to ensure compatibility with the environment. The project's justification indicates that a simplified environmental assessment could lead to an ordinary procedure, causing delays in the research of this energy resource.
Canary Islands maintains a high energy dependence on external sources, primarily based on fossil fuels. Geothermal energy, which harnesses heat stored beneath the Earth's surface, offers continuous 24-hour production, making it an interesting alternative for a more stable electricity system with a greater presence of manageable renewable energies.
High-enthalpy geothermal energy for electricity generation is still in the development phase in the Canary Islands. Therefore, exploratory soundings are necessary to determine the existence of exploitable resources and verify if they meet the appropriate conditions for subsequent electrical utilization, contributing to diversifying generation and reducing fossil fuel dependence.
