Fleet of electric and hybrid vehicles in a natural park in La Palma.
The Department of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has equipped the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, in La Palma, with ten new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, enhancing its operational capacity and sustainability.
This addition, implemented in recent months, includes cars, all-terrain vehicles, a transport van, and light electric vehicles. The total investment exceeds 304,000 euros, funded by Next Generation funds, and aims to optimize surveillance, management, maintenance, and visitor assistance tasks within the park.
The new vehicles will strengthen various areas of action. Environmental agents will have all-terrain vehicles adapted for forest roads, equipped with radios and emergency devices. Additionally, a nine-seater van has been added for transporting organized groups, institutional visits, and educational activities, along with light vehicles for technical staff, guides, and administrative services. The fleet is completed with light electric vehicles, such as a motorcycle for short trips, improving internal mobility within the park.
This initiative complements other actions promoted by the Department in La Palma, such as the acquisition of two B3 helicopters, high-performance divers, the expansion of the drone fleet, and the recent presentation of multifunction robots for hard-to-reach areas. Support has also been provided to volunteer groups caring for the island's forests, with a grant of 90,000 euros to the “Sin Suela” Environmental Volunteer Association, based in Tijarafe, to strengthen forest fire prevention and awareness efforts.
Finally, the Department of Ecological Transition has provided the National Park staff with complete uniforms, footwear, and accessories through a three-year supply contract (2024-2026). Employees also annually receive the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for their duties, in accordance with risk assessments for each position, ensuring adequate safety and working conditions.
