The conference program will begin at 6:30 PM with the opening of the ‘Negrín Exhibition’. This display, which will remain installed until April 24, offers an original and accessible vision of Juan Negrín López, who served as president of the Second Republic, through the illustrations and scripts of the biographical comic by Fer Calvi and Francisco de Zárate.
The official start of the program is scheduled for 7:00 PM. At 7:05 PM, Dr. Salvador González Vázquez, a Doctor in History from the University of La Laguna, will deliver a presentation on the events and consequences of the Civil War in El Paso.
Following this, from 8:00 PM, Miguel Ángel Santiago Pérez, a graduate in Geography and History from the University of La Laguna, will delve into the activities of the municipal corporation of Los Llanos de Aridane. During the Second Republic, this entity experienced intense political activity and profound social transformation, characterized by the struggle between conservative and progressive sectors. This period led, among other events, to the execution of the constitutional and democratic mayor of Los Llanos de Aridane, the socialist Francisco Rodríguez Betencor, on July 18, 1936.
The conference will conclude with a debate panel titled ‘La Palma in the Context of the Second Republic’, moderated by journalist Javier Rodríguez García. This space is designed to foster the exchange of ideas and facilitate a deeper understanding of the crucial elements that defined Palman society in that historical period of change.
With this initiative, the Cabildo de La Palma reaffirms its commitment to promoting critical thinking and knowledge of local history, creating meeting spaces where academia and citizens can unite to honor and understand their shared legacy.
