Pediatric nurse and coordinator of the Primary Care Breastfeeding Consultation of La Palma, Isabel González, explained the care model launched in 2020. This model is based on six phases: welcome, breastfeeding history, comprehensive assessment of mother, infant, and environment, observation of the feeding using the LATCH scale, evaluation of tongue-tie, diagnosis, individualized action plan, and closure with follow-up, coordination, and registration in the patient's clinical history.
The service has seen a notable increase in consultations, rising from 94 in 2020 to 542 in 2025, with 383 consultations registered from January to August of the current year.
The event, organized by the Health Service of the Principality of Asturias and coordinated by the Global Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, brought together professionals from various disciplines in maternal, neonatal, and child health. The objective was to analyze the difficulties, opportunities, and strategies for initiating and maintaining breastfeeding.
Alongside health personnel from La Palma, experts from the Central University Hospital of Asturias, the San Agustín University Hospital of Avilés, and the Vital Álvarez Buylla Hospital of Mieres, among others, participated.
