The Cabildo de La Palma has launched an innovative pilot project to facilitate the participation of minors and adolescents with specific needs in the island's basic sports promotion.

This initiative, led by the Specialized Section for Dependency and Disability of the Social Action Service in coordination with the Sports area, aims to enhance existing support and ensure equitable access to sports activities across the island's 14 municipalities.

"This project responds to a clear need: that no minor is left out of sports due to lack of support. We are working to make inclusion real, accompanying each family and coordinating the resources already available on the island."

Ángeles Fernández · Councillor for Social Action
For his part, the Sports Councillor, Yurguen Hernández, emphasized the importance of making Basic Sports Promotion accessible to everyone. He stated that this project represents a significant step forward in adapting sports practice to the diversity of the population and improving the quality of services offered in the municipalities.
The program is part of the Program for Modernization in Management and the Transformation of Services for the 2024-2025 period, and forms a broader strategy to strengthen specialized support in the community, jointly promoted by the Social Action and Sports areas.
In its initial phase, the technical team collects data from educational settings and sports registrations to better understand the current situation. This analysis is complemented by working groups that allow for the adjustment of interventions to detected needs. The project is structured into four lines of action, including the development of pilot experiences in various sports modalities and coordination with local entities to offer adapted support.
Additionally, a technical report is being prepared to define a common island-wide model and improve coordination between services. Training actions will also be implemented for monitors at Basic Sports Promotion points, with specific content on disability. The project targets minors and adolescents referred from specialized services of the Island Network of Autonomy and Dependency Centers and Services who participate in sports activities. Funding comes from the Comprehensive Employment Plan for the island of La Palma (PIEC), promoted by the Canarian Employment Service of the Government of Canarias and the Employment Council of the Cabildo de La Palma.
