The Management of Health Services of the Health Area of La Palma, under the Department of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with the city councils of both towns, the IES Virgen de las Nieves, and the Canary Emergency Service (SUC), has organized the initiative called ‘One Minute, One Life’.
The main objective of this activity is to raise public awareness about the importance of knowing how to act in the event of a cardiac arrest. The events will take place in the Plaza de España in Los Llanos de Aridane on October 19 and in the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de La Palma the following day.
During both days, practical workshops will be held covering essential techniques such as the recovery position, chest compressions, the use of the semi-automatic external defibrillator (AED), and procedures for airway obstruction by a foreign body (choking).
The central activity of the event will be a challenge to maintain chest compressions for the longest possible time. This test aims not only to challenge the participants' endurance but also to highlight the vital importance of this maneuver for survival during a cardiac arrest. In the previous edition, the challenge was maintained for five consecutive hours.
Through this initiative, the participating entities reinforce their commitment to health education and practical training for citizens, reminding everyone that quickly recognizing a cardiac arrest, alerting emergency services, and initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation as soon as possible are crucial for saving lives.
