The vessel was spotted approximately 40 miles from the island, carrying 33 men and four women. The survivors are currently being transported to Puerto Naos pier in Arrecife, with their disembarkation expected around 11:45 AM.
This incident represents the fourth vessel to reach the Canary Islands in the past four days. Previously, a cayuco was escorted to La Restinga pier in El Hierro last Friday, after being detected eight miles from the island. It carried 159 people, two of whom required medical attention at the Hospital Insular Nuestra Señora de los Reyes.
The initial alert for this cayuco came from the Guardia Civil, who detected a radar echo shortly before 3:00 PM. The escort to the port was carried out by the Salvamar Diphda. The vessel had departed from Ganjur, Gambia, seven days prior, with 30 women and four men on board.
Another rescue occurred on April 4, when Salvamento Marítimo assisted 47 people aboard an inflatable boat located 27 miles south of Gran Canaria. Three of the occupants were hospitalized. The boat was spotted at 11:00 AM by the fishing vessel Julio y Olga, whose crew alerted the authorities.
Arrivals continued this Sunday, with the Salvamar Izar rescuing another 47 migrants from a boat found southeast of Morro Jable, in Fuerteventura. This vessel carried 46 men and one woman. All were transported to Gran Tarajal port, where they received assistance from the Red Cross, the National Police, and Frontex agents.
