Lanzarote's capital now boasts a new citizen leisure facility: the island's first open-air public terrace designed for family use. Located in the central square of the Arrecife Parque Temático, adjacent to El Reducto beach, this opening is part of municipal initiatives to restore and enhance one of the city's main green spaces.
The launch of this project was made possible by the recent recovery of the administrative concession for the land reclaimed from the sea. This authorization, granted by the General Directorate of Coasts and Management of the Canary Islands Maritime Space, concludes a lengthy administrative process. Arrecife's mayor, Yonathan de León, highlighted during a press conference at the park the significance of transferring coastal management responsibilities from the State to the Canary Islands Government to expedite the process.
This broader project, designed by the City Council, aims to transform the Parque Temático into a large coastal green lung. Future expansions will include new sports areas, children's zones, spaces for cultural activities, open-air film screenings, and a dog park, among other facilities. The objective is to establish this enclave as a focal point for leisure and community life, leveraging its prime seaside location and proximity to parking areas.
In parallel with administrative procedures, the council has carried out improvement and refurbishment works. This includes the comprehensive renovation of public restrooms, which had been deteriorated for years, and enhancements to access routes and the main square's surroundings. The Parks and Gardens department has updated the children's play area with adapted equipment and restored the ornamental fountain, which is now operational. These works are scheduled to continue in the coming months.
The new terrace, inaugurated on Thursday, August 27th, coinciding with the August full moon and a lunar eclipse, features tropical-style furnishings, tables, and stools. Its proximity to the children's areas and refurbished restrooms will facilitate family leisure time. Additionally, it will be complemented by food trucks, whose presence will be regulated through public tenders, expanding service offerings for residents and visitors.
From the Department of Commerce and Tourism, led by Eli Merino, initiatives have been promoted to revitalize the space and encourage its use as a community meeting point. The terrace opening is part of a municipal strategy to enhance Arrecife's appeal as a city of services, shopping, and events, highlighting underutilized public spaces and creating new areas for community interaction.
