The Cabildo of Lanzarote has officially communicated its gratitude to the Government of the Canary Islands for the decision to withdraw the maps related to the Renewable Acceleration Zones (ZAR). This measure will allow progress in the creation of a new proposal that better fits the territorial, environmental, and landscape reality of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
According to the official version, this decision is the result of joint work between both administrations over the past few months. This opens a new phase in which the Cabildo will present its own energy model, focused on the orderly implementation of renewable energies, landscape protection, exclusion of rural land with agricultural protection, and public participation in the benefits of energy generation.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has positively assessed the measure, thanking the Government of the Canary Islands for listening to the demands of the island corporation. Betancort emphasized that the withdrawal of these maps corrects a worrying situation and facilitates the construction of a proposal based on territorial knowledge, technical rigor, and respect for the uniqueness of the islands.
Betancort also criticized the socialist opposition, accusing them of generating alarm with maps that the Cabildo never accepted and which have, in fact, been withdrawn for review because they do not align with the institution's model.
For his part, the Minister of Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín Tavío, explained that the new proposal will be based on territorial planning and landscape protection criteria, promoting an orderly implementation of renewables in degraded areas and excluding rural land with agricultural protection.
Regarding the photovoltaic plant planned in Mácher, the Cabildo is preparing an unfavorable institutional report, considering that the project does not align with the energy and territorial model defended for Lanzarote. This stance aligns with that of the Tías City Council, whose mayor is José Juan Cruz Saavedra.
