The Lanzarote III desalination plant, located in Punta de Los Vientos, will increase its daily water supply production capacity by 10,000 tons by 2028, following an upgrade officially put out to tender by the Island Water Consortium.

The upgrade, with an initial budget of 6.48 million euros, has a deadline for bid submissions on September 1st. The aim is to expedite the award process so that the contract for the new rack becomes a firm reality before the end of the year. Work execution will take fourteen months after the agreement is signed, according to the official tender documents.
The project addresses the water emergency situation and the need to increase production due to rising demand, population and tourism growth, and the deterioration of old equipment. The Department of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Waters of the Government of the Canary Islands contributes 5 million euros from its Strategic Subsidy Plan, while the Water Consortium of Lanzarote covers the remaining 1.48 million euros.

"This new investment demonstrates that we are rigorously fulfilling the commitments arising from the declaration of the water emergency. We pledged to increase water production, reduce losses by renovating pipes and networks, and promote a culture of water and savings, and we are decisively advancing in each of these objectives."

Oswaldo Betancort · Island President
Domingo Cejas, the Water Councilor, highlighted the office work involved in developing the project, which was completed in late 2025 and received a favorable technical supervision report in April 2026.
Furthermore, the Water Consortium has approved the allocation of 148,139.64 euros in subsidies for the primary sector to reduce water prices, benefiting 118 recipients with 171 supply policies.
