The Cabildo de Lanzarote has launched six new hybrid buses to modernize its interurban public transport service, significantly improving frequency on the Playa Blanca line and increasing capacity on other key island routes.

The integration of these vehicles, part of a mobility modernization plan promoted by the island corporation, will halve the frequency of service on line 30 (inner Playa Blanca), reducing it from 30 to 15 minutes. This measure addresses one of the main demands from users in the area.

"During this term, more than 30 new buses have already been acquired, a historic figure that reflects this Institution's strong commitment to mobility."

In addition to the improvements in Playa Blanca, two of the new buses will increase the number of available seats on lines 1, 2, and 3, which connect Costa Teguise, Arrecife, and Puerto del Carmen. The remaining two units will be allocated to operational needs of the concessionaire company.
The new units are low-emission hybrid vehicles, equipped with a nine-liter engine and a start-stop system to optimize energy consumption. They incorporate advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that detect lateral and frontal obstacles, recognize speed signs, alert about driver fatigue, and automatically activate lights during sudden braking. They also feature a reverse camera and tire pressure monitoring.

"Lanzarote becomes the first island in the Canary Islands to introduce cognitive accessibility in vehicles, for people with intellectual disabilities or learning difficulties. We want public transport designed for everyone, where no one is left behind."

Regarding safety, the vehicles include an alcohol interlock that prevents starting if the driver fails the test, as well as ABS and ASR braking systems. The driver's cabin is protected by a screen. Accessibility is enhanced with Hanover's HTC system, which provides auditory and visual information adapted not only for people with sensory disabilities but also for those with attention or comprehension difficulties. Finally, the new public transport vehicles incorporate advanced management technology through the Wemob platform, allowing real-time fleet location and control.
The Councillor for Transport and Mobility has announced that the tender for the new interurban transport contract is expected to be launched this summer, which will allow for the consolidation of a more modern system adapted to the real needs of citizens.
