The Lanzarote Water Consortium has unanimously approved the temporary intervention of the water service, with the goal of terminating the contract with the concessionaire company, Canal Gestión, and restoring continuous supply on the island.

The measure, adopted this Monday, responds to the "severe disruptions" affecting the service. A spokesperson for the Cabildo highlighted the political unity in this decision, emphasizing that the general interest of citizens prevails over partisan differences.

"Today in Lanzarote we have shown that the general interest of our neighbors must be and is above political colors. I thank the mayors for supporting the proposals of the Water Consortium technicians. United, it will be easier to face one of the great problems of the legislature, because the deficient management of the public water service affects all residents and visitors to this island."

The spokesperson also guaranteed the job continuity of Canal Gestión employees and expressed confidence that the contract termination will resolve the water problems in Lanzarote. The service intervention is supported by technical and legal reports, and is also considered a common-sense necessity.
A technical report from April 1 concluded that the service problems are widespread, affecting desalination, distribution, sanitation, purification, and reuse. Repeated non-compliance by the concessionaire has led to direct impacts on users and the environment, which are worsening daily.
The procedure for contract termination requires a mandatory report from the Canary Islands Consultative Council, a process that will suspend the expediente deadlines for a maximum of 30 working days. Once the opinion is received, the final proposal will be submitted again to the Assembly for a definitive decision.
The intervention means that the Consortium will directly manage the service, utilizing existing human and material resources from Canal Gestión. Interveners with decision-making capacity will be appointed to ensure the system's continuity. The concessionaire company will have ten working days to present allegations before the Consortium Assembly makes a final decision on the precautionary measure to seize the public water supply, sanitation, and purification service in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
