Recent decisions made at the assembly of the Lanzarote Island Water Consortium have created a tense atmosphere within the governing pact of the Cabildo, particularly after the approval of measures that the Popular Party had requested to postpone.

The president of the Lanzarote Cabildo stated on Monday his confidence that the resolutions concerning the integrated water cycle will not destabilize the government agreement in the island corporation. These statements follow the approval of the contract termination with Canal Gestión Lanzarote and the intervention, despite the request from the Popular Party, a key partner of Canarian Coalition, to defer some agenda items.

"If this costs me the presidency, I will be profoundly calm, because I will be doing what the people of Lanzarote ask of me."

The Cabildo spokesperson emphasized the urgency of action, noting that “Lanzarote has no time” for delays in water management, in response to the proposal to table some of the issues discussed at the assembly. The vote received support from representatives of the Canarian Coalition, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), and Unidos por Yaiza (UPY).
The absence of a Popular Party member from the vote, due to the mayor of Arrecife delegating to a nationalist deputy mayor, prevented their participation. When asked about potential pressures, the Cabildo spokesperson reiterated that the greatest pressure comes from the citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, who have voiced recurring complaints about deficiencies in the water supply service. He concluded by stating that, should he lose the presidency over these decisions, he would leave “with his head held high,” convinced that he is acting for the good of the integrated water cycle.
