The upper floor of the Casas Consistoriales (Town Hall) in Gáldar has been inaugurated following its renovation, thus completing the comprehensive recovery process of one of the municipality's most emblematic historical heritage buildings. The opening was attended by Teodoro Sosa, mayor of Gáldar; Ulises Miranda, Councilor for Tourism; Juan Sebastián López García, Insular Director of Historical Heritage of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, and members of the government team.
This intervention follows the renovation of the main floor and noble area carried out in 2023. The project concludes with the creation of a multipurpose space and a walkable viewpoint on the roof, expanding the cultural, institutional, and tourist possibilities of the building. The Casas Consistoriales are part of the Historic Site of Santiago de los Caballeros, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1982.
The total investment for the project was close to 100,000 euros, financed by the Presidency Department of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. The project was driven by the Tourism and Historical Heritage departments.
The renovation included the installation of wooden flooring, vertical cladding, integrated lighting, and the replacement of cornice stonework. The new walkable viewpoint covers an area of 118 square meters.
Mayor Teodoro Sosa highlighted that the intervention restores the building's splendor and makes it available to citizens, creating new spaces for culture and the enjoyment of heritage. He emphasized that the conservation of historical heritage is a key line of work for the current administration.
For his part, Councilor for Tourism, Ulises Miranda, recalled that the building, initiated over 200 years ago, was close to ruin two decades ago. He mentioned the previous renovation phases since 2009, including the Sala del Sábor and the Consistorial Theater. He also thanked Raúl Mendoza, director of the Josefa Medina Drawing and Painting Academy, for the donation of two paintings.
Juan Sebastián López García, Insular Director of Historical Heritage of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, noted that these grants allow municipalities with Historic Sites to undertake projects of their own choosing within their historical contexts, emphasizing the importance of these spaces for island identity and tourist appeal.
