The insular president, Lola García, has received notification from the Directorate General of Merchant Marine confirming that efforts are underway to expedite the tender process for the maritime line, which will include a stop in Fuerteventura.
This news comes after joint efforts by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, the island's town councils, and the Chamber of Commerce of Fuerteventura, who had expressed their concern over the elimination of this connection.
Lola García highlighted the work of local administrations to ensure a connection she deems "fair, necessary, and strategic" for the island's present and future.
“"In an insular and peripheral economy like Fuerteventura's, the extra costs are directly borne by the final consumer or by small and medium-sized businesses, placing Fuerteventura at a clear disadvantage."
The president added that they expect the stop in Fuerteventura to be included as a Public Service Obligation (OSP) and for the tender to be expedited. The elimination of this connection increases maritime transport costs by approximately 70% to 78%.
Several written communications and repeated concerns conveyed to the Ministry by the Cabildo and the Town Council of Puerto del Rosario, along with the support of other Fuerteventura entities, have been crucial in defending this essential route.
