This agreement also opens a channel for collaboration to promote future university educational infrastructure within the municipality, an aspect on which both institutions are already working to formalize a specific accord.
The cooperation framework aims for university activities to directly benefit the municipality. Key measures include the discount, which can be combined with other university aid, for students registered in Gáldar with a decade of proven residency.
The agreement includes external internships for students of Psychology, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy in various municipal resources, such as the Occupational Center, Day Center, and Municipal Residence, among others.
In the areas of sports, physical activity, and health, the City Council will facilitate the academic, teaching, research, and practical use of the municipal athletics track and other sports facilities. The University will provide the collaboration of its faculty and students from the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences for activities and health promotion programs.
Free workshops and training sessions on active aging, injury prevention, and healthy lifestyle habits will also be included, particularly aimed at the elderly and groups with specific needs.
One of the main objectives is to advance the implementation of future university educational infrastructure in Gáldar, exploring options to expand the presence of the Fernando Pessoa University in the region.
The mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, highlighted that the agreement positions the municipality as a university city, in collaboration with Santa María de Guía, leveraging the proximity of the Fernando Pessoa University.
The president of the Fernando Pessoa University, Antonio Rodríguez Rodríguez, stated that the agreement will enhance the use of municipal facilities for academic, training, and health promotion activities.
The first deputy mayor, Julio Mateo Castillo, emphasized the commitment to keep this collaboration door permanently open, utilizing municipal resources and the citizen fabric for future university projects in Gáldar.
The rector of the Fernando Pessoa University, Antonio José Rodríguez, stressed that residents of Gáldar will benefit from a 10% discount on tuition fees for any official degree program at UFP-C.
