The La Montaña neighborhood in Gáldar has established a new Festivities Committee to revitalize its celebrations and foster citizen participation, marking a new chapter in local festive life.

This initiative, supported by the historic Sociedad Cultural y Recreativa de La Montaña, founded in 1934, aims to restore the dynamism of festivities that had seen reduced activity in recent years. The announcement was made at an event attended by the mayor of Gáldar, Teodoro Sosa, and numerous residents.
The new committee, conceived as an open and citizen-led body, primarily seeks to restore the festivals' role as a space for community gathering and social cohesion. Its members include José Juan Díaz Pérez, Constantino Albelo Mendoza, María del Mar Bolaños Pérez, María de las Nieves González Moreno (Blanqui), Isabel María Montesdeoca Diepa (Mila), Ámbar Aguiar Díaz, Juan Manuel Benítez, Rito Javier García Gil, and Sergio Guzmán Rodríguez.
One of the key announcements was the designation of José Claudio Suárez Pérez, popularly known as Pepito el Guardia, as the town crier for the 2026 festivities. Suárez, a resident deeply connected to the neighborhood and the Virgen de Fátima, was directly chosen by the Festivities Committee.

"He was not chosen in an office, but from the neighborhood itself."

The revival of the festive program has already begun to take shape with the organization of the traditional Torch Procession, scheduled for May 13, coinciding with the feast day of the Virgen de Fátima. This procession, which had not been held for decades, will once again parade through the neighborhood's streets with the old image of the patron saint, with logistical and security support from the Gáldar City Council.
This project is part of an agreement reached in November 2025 between the City Council and the Sociedad Cultural y Recreativa de La Montaña, aimed at fostering citizen participation and strengthening the sociocultural fabric of the neighborhood. The council acts as institutional and technical support, while the organization of events falls to the residents themselves.
