Images of youths performing acrobatics and jumping into the sea from a crane on the Agaete pier are recurring, causing growing concern. This behavior, which significantly increases the danger of suffering serious injuries, has been the subject of repeated warnings from experts.
“"A group of young males are suicidally and senselessly risking their lives, jumping from an old crane located on the pier of the municipality of Agaete, north of Gran Canaria. An action that puts their physical integrity at risk by performing high-risk somersaults, movements, and acrobatics."
Although the metal structure is fenced off to prevent access, some bars have been deliberately removed, allowing young people to use it as an improvised platform. This situation is frequently observed, especially on weekends, despite constant warnings from residents, passersby, and security forces.
The concern is not unfounded, as a decade ago, the same Agaete pier was the scene of a serious accident. A fifteen-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury after a similar dive, an incident that nearly cost him his life and left him with permanent sequelae.
Specialists insist that a bad entry into the water can cause irreversible spinal cord injuries, cervical fractures, or severe trauma in a matter of seconds. In addition to height, factors such as changes in depth, the presence of rocks or submerged structures, and loss of control during the fall, significantly increase the danger of these practices.
