Construction work for affordable housing in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura.
Puerto del Rosario has celebrated the laying of the first stone for the construction of 47 affordable rental homes on Don Quijote street, in the Buenavista neighborhood.
The works for this development, with a budget of 6,816,577.85 euros, have already commenced. Funding is jointly provided by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility through the Canary Housing Institute, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda with European Next Generation funds, and the transfer of land by the Ayuntamiento de Puerto del Rosario.
The project includes homes with garage, storage room, and equipped kitchen, with units ranging from one to six bedrooms, as well as adapted units for people with reduced mobility. The building's design prioritizes energy efficiency and CO₂ emission reduction. It is estimated that the works, with an execution period of 18 months, could be completed by winter 2027.
This project of 47 units adds to other public housing developments on the island, totaling 224. In Puerto del Rosario, this includes the 28 homes allocated on El Bernegal street (in the locality of El Matorral) and the 24 planned in the Rosa Vila neighborhood. In northern Fuerteventura, construction has begun on 77 public homes in Corralejo (Palangre street), and 48 more have been announced in Panorama Tres Islas.
Collaboration between administrations, including the La Oliva Town Council in the north and the Puerto del Rosario Town Council in the capital, along with the Canary Islands Government (through ICAVI or Visocan) and the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, is crucial for the development of public housing, despite administrative complexity. The volume of public housing has increased in the current legislature.
“
"The island president, Lola García, highlighted "the investment of more than 54 million euros that the Cabildo is making to promote housing in Fuerteventura" and noted that this line will allow the construction of 176 homes in different municipalities."
“
"Councilor Pablo Rodríguez stated that the Canary Islands Government "has prioritized housing like never before" and indicated that the regional executive is working on more than 2,000 public housing units across the Archipelago."
“
"The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, affirmed that the first stone at Don Quijote represents "the start of other developments that have already been awarded" and aim to offer a housing alternative to meet social demand in the municipality."
“
"The insular director of the AGE, María Jesús de la Cruz, highlighted the collaboration between administrations to advance in the construction of new housing in Puerto del Rosario and pointed out that the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura have "a significant deficit" in this matter."
