The project, expected to be put out to tender during the first half of May 2026, aims to increase the plant's capacity from 3,000 to 6,000 cubic meters per day. This initiative, which incorporates several improvements, is scheduled for completion by 2029.
Driven by the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water of the Government of Canarias, the project is considered a strategic action to consolidate the water cycle in Fuerteventura. The approved plan allocates half a million euros in 2026, 6.5 million in 2027, 7.1 million in 2028, and 1.4 million in 2029, totaling 15,615,469 euros.

The project addresses the current saturation of the facility and the demographic and tourist growth forecasts for the municipality. In addition to doubling treatment capacity, it will optimize the removal of solids and sands, and include the construction of new facilities for more effective sludge dewatering.
These enhancements will reduce the volume of waste generated, improving its final management and decreasing the environmental impact associated with its transport and treatment. The resulting water will be of higher quality, suitable for irrigation in the primary sector and other uses such as green area irrigation, thereby easing pressure on conventional water resources and increasing availability for public supply.
Furthermore, the plan includes a reduction in discharges into the sea and an improvement of any that may occur, reinforcing the environmental integration of the facility, located in the industrial area of Risco Prieto.
