The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, along with the public company Gestur Canarias, has initiated the repair and renovation works on the fishing pier in El Cotillo, within the municipality of La Oliva, Fuerteventura. The action enters its execution phase after the signing of the site survey report with the awarded entity, Obras Públicas Canarias S.L.
Minister Narvay Quintero highlighted that these works address a long-standing demand from the fishing sector in northern Fuerteventura. With a total investment of 200,000 euros, over 2,000 square meters will be conditioned to modernize the facilities of the Fishermen's Guild and adapt them to the operational needs of maritime professionals.
The head of the department added that the Government of the Canary Islands is thus advancing in the modernization of the island's fishing shelters and updating essential infrastructure for the productive and social fabric of the Canary coast.
The CEO of Gestur Canarias, Agoney Piñero, emphasized the public entity's technical and management capacity to carry out projects that improve public infrastructure and generate territorial impact, ensuring technical quality and adherence to deadlines.
The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, pointed out the importance of promoting measures that guarantee the competitiveness of Fuerteventura's primary sector, especially facing the challenges of double insularity and rising global costs.
The mayor of La Oliva expressed his satisfaction with this news, calling it "very good" for El Cotillo, and thanked the Government of the Canary Islands for listening to the demand and supporting a necessary project for the fishing sector and the town's identity.
The works, with an execution period of two months, focus on repairing damage, reinforcing safety, and optimizing conditions for the first sale and handling of fish catches. They include the comprehensive repair of the jetty, resurfacing of the esplanade, adaptation of service networks, and the replacement of the fuel tank with a new 10,000-liter unit compliant with current regulations.
The project also includes the installation of new gangway doors, the construction of an access sidewalk to the fishing premises, and the general renovation of signage, furniture, and equipment.
