The event, supported by the Cabildo Insular de La Gomera and the Hermigua City Council, will delve into the history of domestic animal species that have inhabited the archipelago. It will review the presence of animals such as goats, sheep, pigs, and bees, managed by the aboriginal Canarians, as well as the introduction of cattle, horses, and camels after the arrival of European colonizers.
The gathering will explore how these species adapted to the diverse ecosystems of the islands, leading to breeds with morphological, genetic, and reproductive differences that, for the most part, persist today. The talk will place special emphasis on the recent declaration of Canary Native Breeds as genetic heritage of the Archipelago.
The talk will address these issues taking into account the recent declaration of Canary Native Breeds as genetic heritage of the Archipelago.
Biologist and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Juan Francisco Capote Álvarez, a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Canary Islands and program coordinator at the Canary Institute of Agricultural Research (ICIA), will be the speaker leading this presentation.
Attendance at the conference is free until full capacity is reached.
