The lyrics of the Canary Islands Anthem have been officially modified to recognize the full count of eight islands comprising the Archipelago. The change, which replaces the verse "Repartido en siete peñas" with "Repartido en ocho peñas", was included in Law 2/2026, dated May 27th, and published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on August 7th.
This reform adapts one of the official symbols of the Canary Islands to the current territorial reality, as outlined in the Statute of Autonomy. The textual modification stems from the express inclusion of La Graciosa as an Island of the Archipelago, a recognition formalized in the 2018 reform of the Statute of Autonomy.
The previous anthem lyrics, approved in 2003, referred to "seven rocky outcrops" ("siete peñas"), reflecting the institutional reference at that time. The Parliament of the Canary Islands' decision to update the text now seeks to ensure consistency between institutional symbols and the current territorial composition.
The reform is purely textual and does not affect the anthem's melody, which is based on the Arrorró from Cantos Canarios by Teobaldo Power, nor its musical score, protection status, or usage conditions. Other official symbols, such as the coat of arms or flag of the Canary Islands, also remain unchanged.
Law 2/2026 was initially published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) on May 27th, 2026, coming into effect the following day. The publication in the BOE on August 7th integrates this regional norm at the state level, meaning the official version of the Canary Islands Anthem now includes the verse "Repartido en ocho peñas".
