The Teguise City Council has launched a new edition of the Luis Ramírez Scholarships, aimed at supporting young people from the municipality who must travel outside of Lanzarote to continue their studies. The call, which resumes after more than eight years of inactivity, will offer three grants of 500 euros per academic year. One of these scholarships is reserved for a student from La Graciosa, reaffirming the council's commitment to equal opportunities for all young people.
The main objective of these scholarships is to contribute to covering part of the training expenses, ensuring that economic situation is not an impediment to accessing or continuing studies. Mayor Olivia Duque highlighted that the resumption of these grants is part of the governing group's commitment to education and equal opportunities, recalling that Teguise was the first City Council to implement them.
Duque emphasized the importance of maintaining the original purpose of the Luis Ramírez Scholarships, linked to supporting education and young talent, and considered it a solidary legacy that remains relevant decades later. The scholarships originate from the testamentary provisions of Don Luis Ramírez, a Lanzarote philanthropist who passed away in 1950, who designated the remainder of his assets to the Religious Congregation of the Salesian Fathers to create perpetual study grants for needy families in Lanzarote.
In compliance with this will, ten scholarships were established, distributed among the island's municipalities: two for Arrecife, three for Teguise (one of them for La Graciosa), and one each for Haría, San Bartolomé, Tías, Yaiza, and Tinajo. The Councilor for Education, Mar Boronat, stressed the priority of facilitating young people's access to their desired studies, even if they have to leave the island, calling education a fundamental tool for building the future.
For this call, the indications from the original documentation of the Luis Ramírez Scholarships and the bases approved at the time for the 2017-2018 academic year have been followed. The application period will remain open until November 5. Interested parties can complete the procedures in person or through the official website of the Teguise City Council.
The Municipal Board responsible for designating the scholarship recipients will be chaired by the Parish Priest, and will include the mayor or her delegate and the Justice of the Peace of Teguise, who will evaluate the applications and designate the best-qualified candidates by majority vote. With this initiative, the municipal corporation reinforces its commitment to education and to ensuring that the youth of Teguise can continue their academic training.
