The La Aldea de San Nicolás City Council has presented the conclusions of a study to improve the First Fish Sale Point to the fishing sector, proposing the extension of sanitary registration and automated relabeling.

The municipality of La Aldea de San Nicolás is advancing in the implementation of improvements for its First Fish Sale Point. Technical conclusions, prepared by the Coastal Action Group of Gran Canaria, indicate that the most viable and efficient alternative is to extend the sanitary registration of an authorized establishment and automate the relabeling process.
The mayor and head of the Primary Sector Department, Pedro Suárez, highlighted that these actions aim to immediately address the lack of basic infrastructure affecting the artisanal fleet. According to the mayor, these measures will boost food sovereignty, economic diversification, and territorial cohesion within the municipality.
Suárez recalled that, although fishing has a limited weight in the local Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to tourism or services, it is considered a strategic activity for La Aldea due to its social, cultural, and territorial value, as well as its contribution to food sovereignty.
The analysis of the fishing sector in La Aldea de San Nicolás concludes that fishing must be promoted as a strategic activity. To achieve this, it is essential to provide it with port and land-based support infrastructure that ensures the continuity of current operations and its potential growth.
It is noted that just two decades ago, the local fleet consisted of six active vessels, indicating a decline. Strengthening the fishing sector could reverse this trend, recovering economic activity and direct employment in the coastal area, and encouraging generational renewal and youth training.
Pedro Suárez emphasized that choosing an automated and direct relabeling model offers an immediate response to fishermen without the need to create a complex and costly structure. The Department will prioritize equipping the first sale point adequately, aiming to generate economic activity, promote training, and expand employment opportunities in the municipality.
