The plenary session of the La Aldea de San Nicolás City Council has approved an institutional declaration to reject the installation of marine cages on its coast and requests the repeal of aquaculture zones included in the Regional Aquaculture Planning Plan.

The different political forces in the municipality agreed this Thursday, in an extraordinary plenary session, to express their strong opposition to the marine fish farm project promoted by Gran Canaria Bass Company SL. The initiative, which requires an investment of 6.82 million euros, plans for the construction of 24 nurseries for annual sea bass production.
The original motion, presented by the PSOE, was modified during the plenary session at the proposal of the governing group, led by mayor Pedro Suárez. It was decided to reach a consensus on a text as an institutional declaration, based on previous agreements from the Cabildo. After a recess, a final wording was agreed upon that incorporated the socialist demands.
The socialist spokesperson, David Godoy, explained that the final wording was built upon the PSOE's motion. Despite the consensus reached, the extraordinary plenary, convened at the request of the PSOE, lasted approximately two hours.
