The San Sebastián de La Gomera City Council has approved the allocation of financial aid for transport to 210 resident young people. These students have pursued higher or intermediate studies, including university and vocational training, outside the island of La Gomera during the 2025/2026 academic year.
The budget set aside for this initiative amounts to €90,000, a significant increase from the €60,000 allocated the previous year. This expansion underscores the council's commitment to the municipality's youth who need to travel to continue their academic pursuits.
“"This year, we received 214 applications, of which 210 were approved, representing over 98 percent. This was made possible by the work of the Administration's staff, who informed students and their families to expedite the submission of documentation."
Mayor Angélica Padilla highlighted the importance of this aid, acknowledging the financial strain many families face to support their children's education. "We have reinforced these grants with a larger budget, convinced that our responsibility lies with families and students, offering them our support to ensure equal opportunities so they can continue their academic training away from La Gomera," she stated.
Padilla also noted that the island's geographical isolation creates a significant extra cost, particularly for young people who, lacking their own income, must study far from home. "Therefore, these grants represent a firm commitment to promoting equal opportunities, ensuring that place of residence does not become an obstacle to pursuing academic training not available in La Gomera," she concluded.
