The event aims to highlight the active participation, skills, and work developed by older adults throughout the year. Driven by the Department of Social Policies and Equality, the initiative integrates artistic, sports, and leisure activities that foster community and active aging.
Currently, the municipal program includes workshops in painting, traditional music, physical maintenance, crafts, and stretching. Additionally, activities like aquagym and dance classes offered during the summer season are part of the offerings. The mayor, Angélica Padilla, emphasized the growing participation of seniors in municipal activities and the importance of a program tailored to their interests.
Padilla stated that “Raíces Creativas” is consolidating as a space for meeting and recognition, allowing the community to see the year-long effort and the active role of older adults. This program directly responds to proposals from the Tagoror del Mayor (Seniors' Council).
“"Spaces like this allow us to make visible the capabilities, creativity, and experiences of older adults, who continue to play a fundamental role in the social and cultural life of our island."
Rosa Elena García, Minister of Social Policy for the Cabildo of La Gomera, highlighted that such events showcase the skills and creativity of seniors, recognizing their value and contribution to society.
The councilor for Social Policies and Equality, Ana Campoy, emphasized that practicing cultural, physical, and leisure activities contributes to physical and emotional well-being, helping to prevent loneliness and social isolation when done in company and with professional guidance.
Campoy added that this initiative is part of the municipal program for the International Day of Older Persons, aiming to create spaces where seniors are protagonists and can enjoy activities that promote participation, social relationships, and active aging.
The program will continue on Saturday, October 17, with the third edition of the Autumn Encounter, a day of coexistence and recognition for the municipality's seniors.
