The Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities (FECAM) is hosting a Mauritanian delegation this week, led by its president, Bamba Sidi Daramane, on an institutional mission focused on knowledge exchange and establishing foundations for cooperation projects.
During the reception in Gran Canaria, the mayor of Agüimes and first vice-president of FECAM, Óscar Hernández, along with FECAM president and mayor of Candelaria, María Concepción Brito, reaffirmed the federation's commitment to municipal cooperation and the exchange of best practices.
Bamba Sidi Daramane highlighted Spain's tradition of decentralization as an opportunity for Mauritania, emphasizing the importance of decentralization for the well-being of local populations. The delegation also included the Consul General of Mauritania in the Canary Islands, Baba Sid’Ahmed, and the Vice Consul, Haki Ahamdi.
The mission aims to strengthen the capacities of Mauritanian local governments and identify collaboration opportunities in areas such as local financing, twinning, waste management, sustainability, and agricultural training. The first day included a meeting at the FECAM headquarters in Gran Canaria to follow up on agreements and ongoing projects.
The agenda includes a technical visit to the Gran Canaria Norte Ecopark to learn about waste treatment processes, and a meeting at Casa África. Technical sessions will also be held at FECAM on municipal financing systems and twinning experiences. The Mauritanian representatives will also visit the Arinaga Industrial Park, accompanied by Óscar Hernández, to learn about best practices in water management and waste collection.
