The Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council will distribute about twenty liters of 'mejunje', the traditional drink of the Romería de los Labradores, during the upcoming Romería del Pino on September 7th.

The Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council is preparing for the Romería del Pino, celebrated on September 7th, by distributing the traditional drink known as 'mejunje'. Mayor Francisco García has prepared approximately twenty liters of this liquor, which will be offered to attendees accompanying the municipal float during the procession.
The preparation of this drink, with a recipe dating back decades, was shared at a workshop organized by the Identity department at the Museo de la Zafra. Forty people attended the event, listening attentively as the mayor explained the origin and ingredients of the 'mejunje'.
According to García, the 'mejunje' originated at the bar of Mariquita López, now known as bar Guatatiboa, in Santa Lucía casco. It was originally a mix of rum, honey, and lemon offered to those who woke up early for mass or agricultural work.
The current recipe includes Canarian rum, local honey, sugar water for sweetness, lemon peel without the white pith, and lemon verbena sprigs for aroma. The mixture is left to macerate for at least a month before consumption.
Fifteen liters of rum were used for the preparation, resulting in the approximately twenty liters to be distributed at the pilgrimage. Workshop attendees were able to ask questions about the ingredients and preparation process.
