The PSOE of Ingenio has announced the loss of Juan José Espino del Toro, whom they describe as a fundamental figure in the recent history of the municipality, of Gran Canaria, and of Canary socialism.
Espino del Toro had an extensive career in public service. He held the mayoral office of Ingenio from 1983 to 2002, served as an Insular Councilor for the Cabildo of Gran Canaria from 1983 to 1999, and led the PSOE of Ingenio and the PSOE of Gran Canaria throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
“"He led a profound transformation of the municipality, promoting the modernization of its infrastructure, the expansion and improvement of public services, significant social advances, and a vision for the future that decisively contributed to the growth, development, and well-being of the citizens."
The socialist statement highlights his capacity for dialogue, closeness, and firm defense of Ingenio's interests, which made him a political and human reference for several generations of residents.
He was also one of the main promoters and co-founders of the Mancomunidad del Sureste de Gran Canaria, alongside the then mayors of Agüimes and Santa Lucía de Tirajana. His commitment to institutional cooperation laid the groundwork for a shared development model.
His strategic vision and commitment to the general interest were fundamental for the economic, social, and environmental progress of the southeastern region of Gran Canaria. The party emphasizes that his dedication and commitment to social justice, equality, and progress left an indelible mark.
The PSOE notes that his leadership significantly strengthened the socialist project and promoted a way of doing politics based on public service, consensus, and the defense of citizens' rights.
“"His legacy will remain alive in the collective memory of our municipality and in the remembrance of those of us who had the privilege of knowing him and his commitment to public service."
