The Mancomunidad del Sureste of Gran Canaria hosted a working meeting on September 22 with representatives from the Student Delegation of the School of Industrial and Civil Engineering (EIIC) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). The meeting aimed to establish the foundation for supporting two pioneering technological initiatives driven by students: the creation of the first university Formula Student team at the ULPGC and the Cervantes submarine prototype from the Kármán ULPGC Project.
Both proposals are highlighted for their capacity to generate significant impact, fostering the retention of young talent, promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) vocations, and positioning the southeastern region and Gran Canaria at the forefront of mobility and engineering.
“"Our intention with this meeting is that these projects do not remain solely at the theoretical university level, but can be put into practice, demonstrating the work capacity and creativity of students from the public universities of the Canary Islands."
Óscar Hernández, president of the Mancomunidad and mayor of Agüimes, stated their desire for these projects to move beyond theoretical university work and become practical realities, showcasing the capability and creativity of students from the Canary Islands' public universities. He assured that the Mancomunidad will continue to support initiatives like these from the School of Industrial and Civil Engineering to contribute to the scientific development of the archipelago.

Saúl Domínguez, president of the Student Delegation of the EICC, emphasized the importance of presenting the Fórmula Student and the Cervantes prototype to public administrations like the Mancomunidad del Sureste. He believes this will serve as inspiration for students in Vocational Training and High School, showing them practical applications of engineering careers. He highlighted the Mancomunidad's commitment to sustainability and innovation, and the crucial role of collaboration between the public and educational sectors.
Following the meeting, the Mancomunidad del Sureste and the Student Delegation of the EIIC of the ULPGC will continue coordinating efforts to consolidate the development of both vehicles and ensure the necessary support for the island's talent to compete at the highest level.
