Óscar Hernández, mayor of Agüimes, assumed the presidency of the Mancomunidad del Sureste this Thursday in an event held at the Agüimes City Hall. He succeeds Vanesa Martín, mayor of Ingenio, who will now serve as second vice-president. The mayor of Santa Lucía, Francisco José García, will hold the first vice-presidency, following the rotational system of the three member municipalities.
Hernández emphasized the stability and continuity of the joint project and the ongoing relevance of its objectives. Among the priorities for his term, he highlighted the awarding of new investments to strengthen the region's hydraulic system. These actions will focus on increasing water desalination, purification, and storage capacity, as well as improving distribution networks to ensure supply and water security.
Furthermore, the new president stressed the importance of advancing projects for energy generation linked to renewable sources, such as the planned wind infrastructure at the Port of Arinaga. These initiatives aim to reduce water production costs and, consequently, the price for users.
The agenda for this new phase also includes promoting employment programs, supporting the agricultural sector, and projects to mitigate the progressive decline in underground water resources, seeking alternative sources to avoid further pressure on aquifers.
Finally, Hernández noted the recent incorporation of the public company Gesplan as a proprietary entity. This tool will streamline the drafting and execution of hydraulic and energy infrastructure projects, providing the Mancomunidad with greater responsiveness and more efficient management.
