The Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council paid tribute this Monday, September 7, 2026, to tomato cultivation at the Ofrenda Romería del Pino in Teror. The municipal float, created by municipal workers Víctor Navarro and Josemi Mederos, showcased a large tomato structure as its centerpiece, accompanied by nearly three hundred people who paraded through the streets of the Marian town.
In collaboration with local companies and farmers, the council donated nearly 500 kilos of fruits, vegetables, salt from the Tenefé Salt Flats, and gofio from the Perez Gil mill in Vecindario. The offering included cucumbers, peppers, salt, gofio with parsley, pumpkins, oranges, and apples. The musical group El Paradero and the dance troupe of Santa Lucía de Tirajana accompanied the float, along with Mayor Francisco García and the Municipal Corporation. Approximately five free buses provided by the City Council transported around 300 residents from the municipality.
Students Alysia and Efrén, from CEIP Las Tederas, recited verses dedicated to Santa Lucía de Tirajana and the Virgen del Pino upon the float's arrival at the basilica. The verses included a tribute to the artisan Juanito Ramírez, an Honored Son of Santa Lucía de Tirajana and recipient of the Roque Nublo Folklórico award from the Cabildo.
“"With farmer's costumes/ Virgen del Pino this day/ my land Santa Lucía/ shows its beautiful colors/. The flavors are magical/ rural of its fortune/ and to your sacred cradles/ my town makes its return /with butter bread, cheese, sweet fruits and olives/. I bring from Santa Lucía/ as the greatest prize/ with linen, rush, and esparto/ treasures of craftsmanship/. There still weaves/ daily awakenings/ a king of artisans/ the great Juan Ramírez Pérez/ who protects the yesterdays/ of my town with his hands."
Mayor Francisco García highlighted the valorization of the municipality's identity and primary sector. "Once again, we highlight our identity and the primary sector, wanting to offer the good products of Santa Lucía to the Patron Saint of Gran Canaria," he stated. García added that "the history of Santa Lucía de Tirajana is closely linked to the hard work of the harvest, which is why we have chosen the tomato as the protagonist of our float this year."
The float, designed by municipal workers using fiberglass and chicken wire, is intended for continued use in exhibitions and at the Zafra Museum.
