Santa Lucía launches vertical photovoltaic system for agricultural research

The project combines renewable energy production with the study of new agrivoltaic applications in the southeast of Gran Canaria.

The Government of the Canary Islands has launched an experimental photovoltaic installation in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, featuring 60 vertical modules to promote self-consumption and innovation in the primary sector.

The infrastructure, located at the La Estación farm of the Canarian Institute of Agricultural Research (ICIA), integrates bifacial technology capable of capturing solar radiation from both sides. With an installed capacity of 25 kWp, it has an estimated annual production of 42,900 kWh.
The vertical arrangement of the panels, organized in rows, serves a dual purpose: in addition to generating energy, they act as windbreaks. This design allows for the analysis of energy and agronomic behavior under the specific climatic conditions of the islands.
The project involved an investment of 97,613.83 euros, funded through Next Generation funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. The initiative aims to modernize the agricultural sector through sustainable solutions.
