The initiative, supported by the town councils of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Ingenio, Agüimes, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Mogán, aims to end the current centralization of the service. Currently, candidates and driving schools in the region are forced to travel to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to take their practical exams.
Municipal representatives have held meetings with the provincial traffic authorities to present the project's feasibility. The councils argue that the measure would benefit a population of over 200,000, reducing economic costs and travel times, while also easing traffic congestion on the GC-1 highway.
The Vecindario Fairgrounds has been identified as the ideal location for this service. According to preliminary technical reports, the site has the necessary infrastructure, including parking areas and direct access to urban and interurban roads, which would allow for the required test routes.
Provincial authorities have shown willingness to evaluate the request, pending technical reports that will determine the consequences and administrative feasibility of the decentralization. Both parties have agreed to resume talks at the end of the year to analyze the results of these studies.
