The mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, will receive the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, on June 11 in Arguineguín, but with reproach for his absence during the 2020 migration crisis.

The mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, has expressed her displeasure regarding the imminent visit of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to Arguineguín on June 11, coinciding with the Pope's visit. Bueno stated her reluctance upon learning of the visit, recalling that during the four most intense months of the 2020 migration crisis, when the port of Arguineguín hosted thousands of migrants in precarious conditions, the Spanish Government did not offer the necessary support. "It upset me greatly to know he is coming, because I needed him when I needed him; for four intense months, with that humanitarian tragedy, we requested him on many occasions, and he did not come, I didn't even receive a phone call," declared the mayor.
The mayor made these statements during a press conference alongside the head of the Local Police, Marcos Domínguez, to inform about the security arrangements for the papal visit. She recalled that in the context of the migration crisis, the Mogán City Council and other island institutions strongly criticized the treatment of migrants at the port, which at one point housed up to 2,500 people. "The Government of Spain did not live up to expectations," stated Bueno, maintaining a criticism that dates back six years.
Despite her reproaches, Bueno assured that they would receive the president with "the institutional respect he deserves," but reiterated her wish to have "a minute of his time to tell him how I feel and how many people from Mogán feel about that humanitarian crisis, regarding which the Government of Spain never lived up to expectations."
Alongside Pedro Sánchez, the presence of three ministers is expected: Félix Bolaños (Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes), Ángel Víctor Torres (Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory), and Elma Saiz (Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations, and Government Spokesperson). During the 2020 migration crisis, several ministers, including Fernando Grande-Marlaska and José Luis Escrivá, did visit Arguineguín.
The mayor also remembered the residents of El Hierro, who also experienced a migration crisis of "equal intensity." "Arguineguín was like an experiment for the Government of Spain to get its act together and provide them with adequate logistics," she noted. She regretted that the Pope could not visit La Restinga, in El Hierro, even for a short period, stating, "the residents of El Hierro deserve it."
