The plenary session of the Mogán Town Hall revealed a marked division concerning the future management of the Puerto Deportivo de Mogán (Mogán Sports Port). The proposal promoted by mayor Onalia Bueno to request an extraordinary 25-year extension to the current concession, which expires in 2031, met with frontal opposition from the PSOE and Nueva Canarias (NC).
Despite the opposition's 'no' vote, the majority of the governing group greenlit the request for the extension to Puertos Canarios (Canary Islands Ports). The Council relies on a technical and legal file that, according to their arguments, proves the Mogán Town Hall's legitimacy to request this extension, based on an express reservation approved by the council in May 1987.
The socialist spokesperson, Artemi Artiles, defended the private management by Puerto de Mogán S.A., calling it a tourist "flagship" and highlighting its collaboration with the fishing community, including the free cession of moorings and the conditioning of spaces for fishing traps. Artiles expressed surprise at the municipal file's "hostility" and criticized the lack of communication with the company.
For their part, the councilor from Nueva Canarias, Juan Manuel Gabella, formally requested that the file be postponed for a more rigorous analysis, deeming the provided documentation incomplete. He questioned the Town Hall's legal basis to claim the extension's ownership if rights and obligations had already been transferred to the private entity.
Mayor Onalia Bueno denied any conflict or animosity with the managing company, assuring that relations have always been cordial. However, she reaffirmed the Town Hall's legal authority to initiate the extension request. She revealed that the council learned of Puerto de Mogán S.A.'s intention to request the extension through "third parties," lamenting the lack of direct communication from the private entity.
“"They are the ones who have requested the right of extension that is still with Puertos Canarios to resolve that file. I insist, the right of extension belongs to the Mogán Town Hall, the ownership, and not precisely to Puerto de Mogán, who, by the way, never informed us that they wanted to exercise that right."
The vote was ultimately approved by the majority of the local government group, reaffirming the council's stance in defending its competencies.
