The Area of Economic Promotion of the Arona City Council, led by Melania Santos, and the Unit of Scientific and Innovation Culture (Cienci@ULL) of the University of La Laguna, have extended the registration period for the third edition of the 'Arona Junior Scientists' school competition. This initiative aims to bring science and technology closer to students in the municipality's educational centers and foster scientific vocations.
The competition is aimed at students in 5th and 6th grade of Primary School and 1st and 2nd grade of Secondary School from Arona's schools. Each team must consist of a minimum of five students, and up to three projects per class can be submitted, always with the support of the supervising teacher.
The projects will receive guidance from doctoral students from the University of La Laguna, who will assist the students in developing their proposals and applying the scientific method, from problem identification to results dissemination.
Proposals must be related to key areas for Arona, such as tourism, transport, environment and biodiversity, renewable energies, small businesses, education and culture, as well as fishing and agriculture.
Each team must submit a final report of a maximum of 10 pages, due before November 30, 2026. Subsequently, the selected projects will be exhibited during the competition's final event, scheduled for December 10, when the winning entries will also be announced.
Project evaluation will consider the clarity and originality of the presentations, their scientific and educational merit, and the impact of the results on the municipality's activity areas. The use of economical and reusable materials will also be valued, contributing to environmental protection.
The competition features three prize categories with financial awards intended for the acquisition of educational materials for the schools: 1,000 euros for the first prize, 750 euros for the second, and 500 euros for the third.
The extended registration period will remain open until November 30, 2026. This initiative is part of the agreement between the Unit of Scientific and Innovation Culture of the University of La Laguna (Cienci@ULL) and the Arona City Council for the ARN Innova Program.
