The Directorate General of Emergencies, based on forecasts from AEMET and other available sources, has activated an Alert for high temperatures across the entire autonomous community of the Canary Islands. This episode of intense heat, expected to last several days, begins this Wednesday with a greater initial impact on the eastern islands, particularly Gran Canaria.
The situation is expected to intensify and spread to the rest of the archipelago from Friday and throughout the weekend. Meteorological models indicate the entry of a warm, dry air mass of African origin. Maximum temperatures could reach or exceed 34 ºC in inland areas and mid-altitude zones facing south and west of Gran Canaria, with forecasts of reaching up to 38 ºC by the start of the weekend.
Additionally, temperatures of up to 33 ºC are predicted in inland areas of Fuerteventura and between 32 and 33 ºC in sectors of inland Tenerife, with the possibility of the episode extending to other islands later. The situation will be accompanied by a low thermal inversion, favoring a warm and dry environment in mid-altitude and high areas.
The entry of African air may bring weak dust haze, mainly to the eastern islands, although significant surface dust concentrations are not initially expected. The Directorate General of Emergencies will continuously monitor the situation and may adjust the activation level or territorial scope based on updates to meteorological forecasts and warnings issued by AEMET.
