The Department of Education has unveiled the school calendar for the 2026/2027 academic year in the Canary Islands, setting September 9 as the start date for Infant and Primary education, and extending the Christmas holidays.

Although the current school year has not yet concluded, the educational community in the Canary Islands is already aware of the main dates for the upcoming academic period. The Department of Education has published the calendar that will govern all non-university public centers in the archipelago.
The first to return to classrooms will be Infant and Primary students, who will begin on September 9. One day later, on September 10, students enrolled in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), basic adult education, and Mentor Classrooms will join. All these stages will conclude on June 22.
Baccalaureate students will start on September 11, finishing earlier—on May 14 for second-year students and June 18 for first-year students. The last to begin will be those in Vocational Training and Artistic Education, on September 16, and Language Schools, on September 21.
One of the main novelties for the 2026/2027 academic year is the Christmas holidays, which will be longer than usual. The last school day of the first term will be Tuesday, December 22, and the second term will begin on Monday, January 11. This will allow students to enjoy more days off after Three Kings' Day, unlike previous years when the return usually occurred on January 8.
In addition to the four national holidays (October 12, November 2, December 7 and 8), each island will have an additional island holiday. These include September 8 in Gran Canaria, September 15 in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, September 18 in Fuerteventura, September 24 in El Hierro, October 5 in La Gomera, and February 2 in Tenerife.
The resolution, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, establishes a minimum of 175 school days for compulsory education. Furthermore, the Department has opened the admission period for Infant and Primary education, running from April 6 to April 17, to be completed online. The enrollment period for continuing students will be from June 17 to June 26.
