Tourist municipalities in the Canary Islands are developing an advanced Tourism Intelligence System to anticipate trends and enhance sustainability, balancing tourism offerings with residents' quality of life.
The Association of Tourist Municipalities of Canarias (AMTC) has launched an innovative shared Tourism Intelligence System (SIT), a pioneering tool integrating over 500 indicators. This system aims to consolidate the position of the fourteen associated destinations as leaders in tourism innovation, enabling more sustainable and efficient management.
The SIT, developed within the framework of the “Decarbonization. Soy Canary Green” project, represents a crucial advancement in the planning, analysis, and management of tourism activity. Its objective is to incorporate sustainability, efficiency, and anticipation criteria, facilitating data-driven decision-making based on objective and updated information.
“
"The SIT allows us to rigorously measure the real impact of tourism in our municipalities and make responsible decisions to maintain the balance between tourism activity, territorial sustainability, and the well-being of those who live there."
The effectiveness of this shared intelligence system lies in the contextualized interpretation of its indicators, adapted to the reality of each territory. To achieve this, the AMTC collaborates closely with key associations and entities in the sector, which will validate and enrich the information. This synergy will culminate in the creation of a specialized observatory that will generate strategic reports for city councils, tourism companies, and other stakeholders involved in the sustainable development of Canarian destinations.
The system is distinguished by its collaborative nature, integrating data from the fourteen AMTC municipalities with information from external sources such as the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and INATLAS. This integration provides a comprehensive view of tourism behavior, optimizing strategic planning, trend anticipation, and improving both the visitor experience and the quality of life for residents.
“
"It represents a qualitative leap in how tourist municipalities make decisions, as it allows us to move from intuition to evidence. The SIT is key to prioritizing investments, planning services, and anticipating needs, ensuring that tourism development goes hand in hand with the quality of life of the resident population."
The Tourism Intelligence System comprises twelve interconnected modules that comprehensively analyze tourism activity, including accommodation supply, overnight stays, tourist housing, expenditure, visitor concentration, origin markets, hotel profitability, occupancy rates, average stay, passenger arrivals at airports, and related employment and business fabric. Additionally, it incorporates predictive analysis modules to anticipate trends and enhance destinations' response capabilities.
An advanced sustainability module, with over 30 specific indicators, allows for cross-referencing data with territorial carrying capacity variables. This tool is essential for accurately measuring the real impact of tourism and moving towards a model that balances economic development, environmental protection, and citizen well-being. The SIT is a strategic tool for public officials, facilitating policy evaluation, investment planning, and the definition of common strategies based on objective data.
