The close of the 2024 fiscal year left a historic amount of savings in the archipelago's municipal coffers. According to official data, municipalities in the province of Las Palmas hold 1.618,5 million euros, while those in Santa Cruz de Tenerife account for 921,9 million. This volume of resources, which has increased fivefold since 2006, can now be used for the construction and promotion of public housing.
The measure responds to a long-standing demand from Canarian municipalities, which have for years called for greater autonomy in managing their healthy budgets. The Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam) has welcomed this development, although it maintains that flexibility should be extended to other essential public services beyond housing.
The growth of these funds is largely due to the strict budgetary stability rules imposed over the last decade, which limited the spending capacity of local governments. Until now, municipalities could only use their savings for 'financially sustainable' investments, a category that explicitly excluded housing projects.
“"Municipalities must also be able to use their savings in other essential areas for the provision of public services."
