The council's decision to revoke the authorization for the works, funded by a grant from the Spanish High Council for Sports (CSD), has resulted in a court ruling in favor of the sports club. The awarded amount includes the cost of replacing the artificial turf with natural grass, as well as accrued interest.
CD Akeki had received a grant of 1,327,072.12 euros from the CSD to adapt its facilities to the requirements of the top women's football league. However, following municipal elections and a change in government in Granadilla, the works were denied under the argument of prioritizing the use of the facilities by other users.
The club sued the City Council, arguing that it had initially approved the renovation plan and that the reversal constituted a breach of contract. The Court of First Instance of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has ruled in favor of CD Akeki, recognizing the financial damage suffered by the club, which had already paid 224,888.22 euros to a specialized company for the turf replacement.
The relationship between the City Council and the club dates back to March 2022, when the preferential use of the La Palmera stadium was granted for five years. Subsequently, improvement works were authorized, including an extension of the concession for an additional 30 years, aiming to meet competition demands and enhance the facilities.
Following the new municipal government's refusal in July 2023, the club was forced to inform the CSD of the situation. The CSD then ordered the repayment of the grant and an additional payment of 63,229.08 euros in interest. The club had already complied with this order but now seeks to recover the funds invested in the works that could not be carried out.
