Pope Leo XIV has publicly praised the hospitality of the Canary Islands for allowing the arrival of the MV Hondius cruise ship, carrying passengers affected by a hantavirus outbreak, in a gesture of international solidarity.

The pontiff, after the Sunday Regina Coeli prayer, expressed in Spanish his gratitude for the "welcome that characterizes the people of the Canary Islands" in response to the ship's situation. This recognition comes at a crucial time, as the disembarkation of the cruise ship's occupants began this Sunday in Tenerife.

"I want to thank the welcome that characterizes the people of the Canary Islands for allowing the arrival of the Hondius cruise ship."

The disembarkation operation in Tenerife involves the evacuation and repatriation of passengers and crew under strict health control. The MV Hondius arrived at the island after several days of international media attention due to the health situation on board.
Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that all occupants of the ship are apparently healthy and asymptomatic, a 42-day isolation period has been recommended. This preventive measure is due to the virus potentially taking up to six weeks to manifest. The management of this situation has required extensive coordination among health authorities, public administrations, and international organizations.
