Filmoteca Canaria, part of the Government of the Canary Islands, presents the special session ‘Zombies Korea’, dedicated to the contemporary rise of South Korean horror cinema and focusing on the influential filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho.
On Tuesday, July 14th, the Teatro Guiniguada will host a double screening of two of the director's most acclaimed films: ‘Seoul Station’ at 6:00 PM and ‘Train to Busan’ at 7:45 PM. This event will offer a journey through Yeon Sang-ho's creative universe, where zombies serve as a tool for social critique.
The first screening, the animated production ‘Seoul Station’, written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, is set in Seoul's central station. The plot follows a young woman seeking refuge there as homeless individuals begin to show strange symptoms, unleashing a horde of infected that devastates the area. Meanwhile, the protagonist's father and boyfriend embark on a desperate search for her.
Following this, ‘Train to Busan’ will be screened, a revitalization of the live-action genre. The story follows Sok-woo and his daughter on a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan, a journey interrupted by a zombie outbreak across South Korea that also affects the train's passengers, initiating a battle for survival in a claustrophobic high-speed journey.
Yeon Sang-ho has established himself as a key figure in understanding the evolution of contemporary Asian horror and thriller. His filmography, encompassing both animation and live-action, is praised for its ability to weave narratives of physical horror and constant tension, delving deeply into society's potential responses to the conflicts he presents.
Tickets for the ‘Zombies Korea’ double feature are available for free on the Teatro Guiniguada website and at the venue's box office before the screenings begin.
