The Guardia Civil has increased surveillance in Tenerife, warning drivers about the dangers of driving with faulty windshield wipers, especially during spring rains.

With the arrival of spring, precipitation can catch drivers by surprise, and the combination of the first drops with accumulated dust and oil on the asphalt creates a slippery surface. This situation, coupled with reduced visibility, significantly increases the risk of accidents.

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) emphasizes that visibility is compromised in the rain, a problem that worsens at night, making it difficult to distinguish road markings and identify other vehicles. A damaged windshield or deteriorated wiper blades multiply this risk, leaving water streaks and potentially scratching the glass.
To ensure safe driving, it is recommended to check and replace windshield wiper blades at least once a year, or sooner if the vehicle covers many kilometers. Noises, poor cleaning, or streaks are clear signs that they need to be changed.
The General Traffic Regulations require drivers to maintain optimal visibility through the glazed surface. Failure to comply with this regulation, by driving with faulty windshield wipers or blades, can result in fines ranging from 80 to 200 euros, without loss of license points. These penalties aim to prevent dangerous situations for personal safety and that of other road users, especially during heavy rain.
